Tragedy as 10-year-old boy, four others die in Lagos gas explosion

Tragedy has struck at Ojekunle Street, Ladipo area of Mushin this morning as gas exploded, killing a 10-year-old boy and four others and left a yet-to-be ascertained number of residence injured.

TheStory gathered that 3 males and one female (mama Funmi) recovered dead in the incident that occurred at 21, Ojekunle Street while the only infant rescued alive died before getting to hospital.

It was also learnt that the tragic incident which was reported at 08:42 hours Tuesday morning via the State emergency reporting platform was swiftly responded to by a combination of the State first and secondary responders.

Both National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and the Director
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service,Mrs Margaret Adeseye confirmed the incident, saying efforts are currently ongoing to manage the incident.

Confirming the death of four victims, NEMA spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, told TheStory that 4 adults 3,males and one female (mama Funmi) and were recovered dead while the only infant rescued alive died before getting to hospital.

He said the incident occurred at the LPG domestic retailing Centre located at Ojekunle Street, Ladipo Spare Part market.

He said that the agency was assisted in the recovery of bodies and injured victims by a number of other agencies which included the State Fire Service, Police Disaster Management Unit, NEMA and LASEMA.

On her part, the state fire service director,
Adeseye said that on arrival at the scene, he fire agency discovered that the incident occurred at an open space used for several activities including a beer parlour, mechanic workshop, spare parts sale and gas shop amongst others while housing a makeshift structure.

She said: “Three male adults have been recovered as rescue and recovery operations continue in an environment isolated from causing any further secondary incident. Preliminary investigations to establish the fact of the incident continue and further discovery will be made public.”
